The California State Assembly has approved a bill to phase out the import and commercial sale of single-use electronic cigarettes. Supported by environmental and public health groups, the legislation now awaits a signature from Governor Gavin Newsom to officially take effect.
Penalties for Illegal Vape Sales
Under the proposed law, the commercial sale of disposable vapes will become illegal. Retailers violating the ban face financial penalties and the loss of their tobacco retail licenses. Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, the bill's sponsor, emphasized the financial burden of these products on local communities.
"We hope the Governor recognizes the threat these devices represent to our communities and that the costs of the cleanup they leave are assumed by the taxpayers," Irwin stated.
Environmental and Public Health Concerns
The ban has gained support from civil and environmental organizations, including the California Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG). Research from CALPIRG reveals that US consumers throw away approximately 500,000 disposable e-cigarettes every day, creating hazardous electronic and chemical waste.
Additionally, public health officials point to rising youth usage. A survey by the California Department of Public Health confirmed that e-cigarettes remained the most popular tobacco product among the state's high school students in 2023.
