The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially authorized the sale of fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adults, marking a major policy shift under the Trump administration. Driven by a decade-low drop in teen vaping and intense industry lobbying, this decision aims to offer adult smokers new alternatives while relying on strict digital safeguards to prevent youth access.
Vaping manufacturers have long argued that their products are crucial for reducing the 480,000 annual U.S. deaths caused by smoking-related illnesses. However, these potential harm-reduction benefits were previously overshadowed by the youth vaping epidemic.
Los Angeles-based Glas Inc. is the first company to receive this landmark authorization. Previously, the FDA had only permitted tobacco or menthol-flavored products, predominantly from industry giants like Juul and Altria.
| Authorized Product Name | Flavor Profile |
|---|---|
| Gold | Mango |
| Sapphire | Blueberry |
| Classic Menthol | Menthol |
| Fresh Menthol | Menthol |
The FDA emphasized that Tuesday's announcement is not a blanket endorsement. To mitigate underage use, the newly authorized Glas e-cigarettes utilize a rigorous digital age-verification system. Users must verify their government ID via a cellphone, and the device will only operate when connected to the verified user's phone via Bluetooth.
Kathy Crosby of the Truth Initiative, an anti-tobacco nonprofit, called the approval a "key test case," urging continued vigilance in monitoring the use of these products among young people.
The move aligns with President Donald Trump's campaign promise to "save" vaping. This contrasts sharply with the approach under President Joe Biden, where the FDA rejected over a million applications for flavored vapes to curb the 2019 teen vaping surge. Interestingly, during his first term, Trump actually implemented the initial flavor restrictions and raised the tobacco purchasing age to 21.
Despite this new legal pathway for domestic manufacturers, government data shows a lingering challenge: the vast majority of teens who vape still use unauthorized, cheap, disposable fruit and candy-flavored products, primarily imported from China.
