As the UK prepares for a nationwide ban on disposable vapes set to take effect in June 2025, Worcestershire County Council reminds residents of the importance of safe and environmentally-friendly vape disposal. With 5 million vapes discarded weekly across the UK, many end up in landfills where they leak hazardous chemicals, posing significant environmental risks.
Lithium batteries and other chemicals found in vapes can lead to fires in waste collection vehicles and recycling centres, making proper disposal critical. Disposable vapes should never be placed in black or green bins, as they require specialist recycling.
Dedicated Vape Recycling Points Available at Worcestershire's Household Recycling Centres
To address this issue, each of Worcestershire's Household Recycling Centres has dedicated vape recycling points, providing residents with a safe and accessible way to dispose of their used devices. Councillor Emma Stokes, Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, urges residents to use these facilities responsibly.
"We're seeing more and more disposable vapes in bins at our recycling facility. Although labelled as 'disposable,' these vapes should only be recycled at our recycling centres," Stokes said. "They contain valuable resources that can be recycled and, more importantly, pose a fire and explosion risk if handled improperly. While vapes are still around, let's make sure we're disposing of them correctly."
Stokes encourages residents to recycle their vapes the next time they visit one of the county's eleven recycling centres, looking out for the pink bucket in the battery section.
Proper Vape Recycling Protects the Environment and Reduces Fire Hazards
By recycling vapes properly, residents contribute to protecting the environment, reducing fire hazards, and reclaiming valuable materials. Worcestershire County Council emphasizes that this small but important step helps ensure a safer, cleaner community.
