Norton Children’s Prevention & Wellness has warned that Kentucky high school seniors are vaping at rates exceeding the national average. This trend, driven by youth-appealing marketing, leaves many teenagers trapped in a cycle of nicotine addiction, struggling to quit in secret while battling severe withdrawal symptoms.

According to Michelle Shaver, a coordinator at Norton Children’s, about 25% of the state's high school seniors used vapes or cigarettes in the past month. Nationwide, 1.6 million middle and high school students reported usage in 2024, with middle schoolers making up a third of that demographic.

The core issue lies in the difficulty of quitting. Shaver noted that roughly 65% of vaping teens have tried to stop. However, nicotine addiction exacerbates normal adolescent stress. Withdrawal symptoms—such as irritability, cravings, and insomnia—often pull them back into the habit.

To combat this crisis, Norton Children’s Prevention & Wellness is providing free cessation support through the American Lung Association’s "Not On Tobacco" program. The initiative includes:

    • Availability for youths ages 14 to 18.
    • Four 90-minute hybrid sessions (two in-person, two online).
    • Actionable focus on creating quit plans and building healthier habits.

For parents discovering their child's vaping habit, experts advise empathy over anger. "Lead with their care instead of the scare," Shaver recommended, emphasizing that a calm demeanor ensures teens feel supported rather than punished.

Health officials remain optimistic that early education in elementary schools, coupled with expanded access to cessation resources, can effectively curb the appeal and dangers of youth vaping.
